For many ambitious students across Australia, the dream of becoming a doctor is the ultimate academic goal. However, the pathway to becoming one is widely considered one of the most competitive journeys in higher education. If you are planning to start medical school in 2027, your preparation time is not in the distant future. It’s right now.

Securing a place in an undergraduate medicine program requires a strategic balance of three critical components. These are:

  1. a competitive UCAT ANZ score
  2. a high ATAR, and
  3. a stellar interview performance.

This guide will help you understand how these components interact and navigate the university requirements for the 2027 intake.

At Matrix Education, we have spent over two decades mentoring students to help them reach their lifelong ambitions. Whether you are aiming for the University of Sydney, UNSW, Monash, or other prestigious institutions, Matrix can help you achieve your future career in healthcare.

1. The UCAT ANZ: The First Major Challenge

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) is often the most stressful component for students because it is unlike any school exam. It does not test your knowledge of biology or chemistry. Instead, it assesses the cognitive abilities and behavioural traits considered important for doctors.

If you intend to start medical school in 2027, you will generally sit the UCAT in the middle of 2026 (during Year 12). The exam consists of five subtests:

  • Verbal Reasoning: Assesses your ability to critically evaluate information presented in written form.
  • Decision Making: Tests your ability to apply logic to reach a decision or conclusion.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Evaluates your ability to critically evaluate information presented in numerical form.
  • Abstract Reasoning: Assesses your use of convergent and divergent thinking to infer relationships from information.
  • Situational Judgement: Measures your capacity to understand real-world situations and to identify critical factors and appropriate behaviour.

What is a “Good” Score?

While the threshold changes every year based on the cohort’s performance, a score above the 90th percentile (typically around 3000+) is generally considered competitive for interviews at top universities like UNSW or Monash. However, some universities place more weight on the UCAT than others. For example, Western Sydney University has historically placed significant emphasis on this test for interview selection.

For further information on UCAT – what each section covers, how scores are calculated, strategies and mock exams – read our Beginner’s Guide to UCAT. Matrix offers UCAT tutoring online and on-campus.

Boost your UCAT score

Prepare for UCAT with a 2 or 4-day course with 7 full mock tests, expert teachers, and theory lessons.

2. The ATAR: Academic Excellence

Just as the UCAT is a key aspect of your medical journey, your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) remains the foundation of your application. Universities need to know that you can handle the rigorous intellectual demands of a medical degree.

ATAR Requirements

For most undergraduate medical programs in Australia, a 99.00 ATAR or higher is the standard benchmark for unbonded local places (a medical degree with no geographical work restrictions). However, the requirements vary depending on the university and your UCAT score.

Subject Prerequisites

Beyond the rank, you must ensure you are studying the correct subjects. Chemistry is a common prerequisite for many medical courses. English is also mandatory for ATAR calculation in most states. High-level Maths is often recommended for assumed knowledge.

At Matrix, our structured tutoring programs are designed to help you maximise this portion of your application. With class sizes capped at 15 students, our expert teachers provide the mentorship required to push students to achieve high results. 3. The Medical Interview

You have the grades and the aptitude test score. Now, the universities want to know who you are. The interview is designed to assess your empathy, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and motivation for studying medicine.

There are generally two formats:

  • Semi-Structured Panel Interview: A traditional format where you sit across from two or three interviewers.
  • Multiple Mini Interview (MMI): A circuit of small stations. At each station, you are given a scenario or a question and have a short time to respond before moving to the next.

To prepare for 2027 entry, you should start building your soft skills now. Engage in volunteer work, stay up to date with current health issues in the news, and practise articulating your thoughts clearly with interview questions.

University-Specific Requirements

Every university calculates your entry score differently. Here is a snapshot of the requirements for major institutions in NSW and Victoria:

New South Wales

  • University of Sydney (USYD): USYD consistently requires an ATAR of 99.95 for the double-degree Medicine program, although pathways exist for eligible applicants. USYD entry relies solely on ATAR and interview performance.
  • University of NSW (UNSW): Selection is based on a combination of ATAR, UCAT, and interview. They are weighted roughly equally. This means a weakness in one area can sometimes be compensated for by a strength in another.
  • Western Sydney University (WSU) / Charles Sturt University (CSU): These unis operate the Joint Program in Medicine. Acceptance into WSU is heavily considered based on interview performance (75%), followed by a mixture of UCAT performance and ATAR (25%).
  • University of Newcastle / University of New England (JMP): This Joint Program focuses on a baseline ATAR and a strong UCAT to grant an interview. These elements, as well as a Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA), determine the offer.

Victoria

  • Monash University: The only Victorian university offering direct entry into medicine for school leavers. They use a weighted average of equal parts ATAR, UCAT, and interview.
  • University of Melbourne: This university operates under the ‘Melbourne Model’, where undergraduate degrees have broad and varied knowledge learning, with career specialisation occurring during postgraduate degrees. The postgraduate Doctor of Medicine requires a favourable GAMSAT and interview results. High achievers (99.90+ ATAR) can secure a ‘Chancellor’s Scholar’ provisional pathway directly from Year 12 – however, this still requires an undergraduate degree to be completed before medicine.

Strategic Planning: The Matrix Approach

The journey to medical school is a marathon. Many students make the mistake of focusing entirely on the UCAT in the first half of Year 12, causing their school grades to slip. Conversely, others ignore the UCAT until it is too late.

The Year 10 and 11 Foundation

If you are currently in Year 10 or 11, now is the time to solidify your understanding of core subjects like English, Maths, and Science. The concepts you learn now form the foundation of your Year 12 success. Our term courses and holiday programs are designed to keep you one step ahead of your school curriculum, reducing stress when exam blocks arrive.
