Why Holiday Blocks Are Secret Tools for VCE Success

Many students view the school holidays and term weekends solely as a time for relaxation. While rest is vital, the most successful students view these times as opportunities to learn and get ahead. At Matrix, we consistently see that VCE students who use the holiday periods for structured learning outperform their peers who only study during the school term. For younger students, this is the chance to build foundational skills for each subject.

Here’s how to use each holiday break strategically in 2026:

January holidays: The strong start

The Summer holidays before Term 1 are the perfect time to learn upcoming content or revise key skills.

Junior high school students can become rusty due to the long break between the end of Term 4 2025 and the start of Term 1 2026. That is why it’s especially important to engage in academically engaging activities. Students can revisit core concepts or refine their English writing and Maths problem-solving skills in our 4-day Holiday programs.

Senior VCE students can complete the entire first module of their English, Maths, or Science subjects before school starts, freeing up time during the term to focus on other subjects or activities. This approach helps students feel more confident when the topic is revisited at school, allowing you to revise the content and ask more profound questions during class, instead of focusing all your attention on processing new information. At Matrix, we can help you get ahead in English, Maths, and Science with our 5-day and 9-day Holiday Accelerated Courses

April holidays: Consolidation

Term 1 is often a wake-up call for new VCE students, as the increased workload and expectations are made clear. The April holidays are essential for consolidating the first term’s content, fixing gaps in your knowledge or study habits, and preparing for upcoming assessments – specifically, School-based Assessments (SACs) and School-assessed Tasks (SATs) for Year 12 students.

Our Year 7 – 10 Holiday programs and Year 11 and 12 Holiday Accelerated Courses continue throughout the year, allowing students to continue strengthening their abilities and subject knowledge.

July holidays: Preparation

The July holidays are arguably the most critical period for Year 12 students. With trial exams taking place in Term 3, students should use this time to prepare. A structured holiday course during this period can drastically improve exam technique, confidence, and results. Matrix also offers VCE Exam Preparation Courses, which makes you VCE ready in just 9 days.

September holidays: The final exam sprint

The September holidays are the final opportunity for intensive revision before the official VCE written examinations. The focus here shifts from learning content to applying it under timed conditions.

Building your high-ATAR VCE study plan

The term and holiday dates give you the ‘when‘, but a study plan gives you the ‘how‘. To maximise 2026, you need a routine that balances intensity with sustainability. Below is a framework for creating a robust study plan, tailored for Victorian students:

1. Set clear, quantifiable goals

Vague goals like “do better in Maths” rarely lead to success. Instead, set specific targets using goal-setting systems like SMART. This system allows you to clearly define what you hope to achieve by making your goal Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Let’s use the initial goal “do better in Maths” and apply the SMART system:

Specific

  • What do I want to accomplish?
  • How will I accomplish it?
  • VCE study score of 45 for Maths Methods.
  • Complete three past VCE exam papers each week under timed conditions, and review mistakes within 48 hours.
Measurable

  • What does success look like?
  • How will I measure my goal?
  • Rank in the top 2% of my cohort in Maths Methods for the upcoming trial exam. Based on my cohort’s performance, I need to get 90% to achieve this.
Achievable

  • Is this something I can realistically achieve?
  • If not, how can I change it?
  • I have other subjects that need my attention. I will start with two practice papers each week, and scale up to three after the trial exam.
Relevant

  • Why do I want to achieve this goal?
  • How does this align with my identity or values?
  • I want to study the Bachelor of Actuarial Science at Monash University, which has a minimum ATAR of around 92. Achieving a high study score will help me in the degree, and increase my ATAR.
Time-bound

  • When will I complete my goal?
  • I have 2 months until my trial exam, and 4 months until the VCE exam.

Now we’ve decided on the following SMART goal:

I will complete two Maths Methods past papers each week for the next 2 months, and review my mistakes each time so I can improve and score 90% in the upcoming trial exam.

Write your goals using this method and place them somewhere you can see them every day to reinforce them.

2. The Matrix Method of structured learning

Relying on motivation to study is risky because it can fluctuate and lead to procrastination. Relying on a system instead provides guidance on your study routine. We recommend a three-step cycle for every topic:

  • Theory: Learn the concept thoroughly. This is where tutoring from expert teachers can clarify complex ideas faster than self-study.
  • Application: Practice standard questions to ensure you understand the mechanics of the problem.
  • Extension: Attempt difficult, exam-style questions that require you to combine multiple concepts. This step is where the high-ATAR scores are generated.

3. Implement active recall and spaced repetition

Passively reading textbooks is one of the least effective ways to study. To retain information for the VCE exams, you must use active recall

Active recall is the practice of recalling information you’ve already learned without relying on external sources like a textbook. Spaced repetition takes this technique a step further through intentionally delaying your study sessions until you’re about to forget the information. Using these in conjunction activates your memory and reinforces neural links in your brain.

Imagine that your brain is a series of interconnected pathways – weak neural links are dense jungle paths overgrown with foliage, while strong neural links are paved, brightly lit highways. The more you reinforce a neural link, the more your brain cuts through the jungle growth, making it easier for you to walk down that path and remember the information next time. By contrast, passively reading your textbook to study barely creates a pathway in the first place.

Cramming before a test also isn’t an effective way to study because of both the time it takes to build a strong neural link and the ‘forgetting curve’ – a phenomenon where you exponentially forget new information within 24 hours unless you immediately and consistently review it. The more often and strategically you review your subject content, the less likely you’ll be affected by the ‘forgetting curve’.

Spacing out the times that you recall information makes it more likely that the information will be stored in your long-term memory, freeing up your mental bandwidth to learn more complicated concepts. Flashcard apps like Anki integrate spaced repetition by displaying cards at different times, based on how well you previously performed.

4. Schedule your downtime

It sounds counterintuitive, but you must plan your rest before you plan your work. If you do not schedule guilt-free breaks, you will eventually burn out and take unplanned, guilt-ridden breaks. In your 2026 planner, block out time for sport, socialising, and sleep.

A rested brain absorbs information; an exhausted brain merely deflects it.

How Matrix Education accelerates your progress

Even the best study plan can struggle without the right guidance. This is where Matrix Education bridges the gap between potential and performance. As a leading tutoring provider in Sydney and Melbourne, we specialise in helping students achieve their lifelong ambitions through mentorship and structured learning.

Small Class Sizes for Personalised Attention

Large classrooms or lecture halls can leave students feeling lost without specific teacher guidance, or too shy to ask questions in front of their peers. At Matrix, we cap our class sizes at 15 students. This ensures that every student receives the personal attention they need to master difficult concepts. Our teachers are not just instructors; they are subject experts who guide students through the academic challenges of high school and the VCE.

Getting Ahead of the Curve

Our programs teach content one term ahead of school. When a Matrix student sits in their regular classroom, they are hearing the information for the second or third time. This improves confidence and allows them to participate more actively in class, leading to better internal rankings and assessment scores.

Flexible Learning Options

We understand that students have busy schedules. Matrix Education offers both on-campus tutoring at our Box Hill campus and high-quality online learning options. Whether you prefer the energy of a classroom or the focus of home study, our resources are designed to support your journey.
