Why should I do past papers?

Scoring high marks in the Physics HSC exam requires practice. The memorisation of information isn’t enough for a Band 6.

NESA and your teachers have specific requirements for the structure of responses, the information you include and how effectively you can apply your theoretical knowledge to a practical application.

Summarising and rereading your notes will only get you a portion of the way to band 6. Many studies show that practice and testing is the highest utility preparation.

How should I do past papers?

At first, you may not have the confidence to do past HSC papers under exam conditions. This is fine, you’ll get there.

  1. Initially, attempt parts of past papers under untimed and/or open book conditions.
  2. Look over your responses, compare them to our solutions and explanations for that paper. Once you understand what an ideal response looks like, you’ll see what your response is lacking and how you can improve it for next time.
  3. This process of reflection and feedback will help you construct an effective and practical understanding of how to approach HSC Physics questions, so you can progressively ease into more challenging exam conditions.

With enough practice, you will gain the confidence to sit any Physics HSC paper under the required exam conditions.
