Want to know how to get into James Ruse? In this article, we outline the application process for students wanting to enter James Ruse in Year 7.

Entrance requirements and application process for James Ruse Agricultural High School

Up to 120 students are admitted in year 7 via the Selective High School Placement Test conducted in March every year. In order to be considered for entry in year 7, students must apply in November of year 5 and sit the Selective High School Placement Test the following year when they are in year 6.

While a school’s entry score is not directly linked to their HSC performance, James Ruse has consistently had one of the highest entry scores to match their state-topping HSC performance.

What is the Selective School Test?

The Selective School test is the standardised test that all NSW Selective School applicants sit. It is designed to challenge even the most gifted of students to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to flourish at a Selective School. Keep in mind that less than one-third of applicants are successful in gaining a place to a selective school, and a much smaller portion is admitted into James Ruse.

What is being tested?

There are four components to the Selective School Test:

  1. Reading
  2. Mathematical Reasoning
  3. Thinking skills
  4. Writing
