VCAA requires students to study Specialist Mathematics Units 3 and 4 alongside, or after completing, Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4. This isn’t just a bureaucratic rule. VTAC uses a statistical process to adjust raw study scores before they’re used in ATAR calculations. Subjects where the cohort performs strongly relative to other subjects tend to scale up. Both Maths Methods and Specialist Maths have historically benefited from positive scaling.

Over recent years, Specialist Maths has consistently been among the top-scaling subjects in Victoria. A raw study score of 40 in Specialist has recently scaled to the low 50s (51 in the 2025 VTAC scaling report), and has historically scaled to 47 or higher in most years.
