Most VCE Chemistry students don’t lose marks because they don’t know the content. They lose marks because of avoidable errors under exam conditions, misreading a question, running out of time, or writing an answer that doesn’t match what the examiner is actually looking for. The good news is that every one of these mistakes shows up repeatedly in VCAA Chemistry past exams and examination reports, which means they’re entirely predictable and entirely fixable.
Below are the ten mistakes we see most often in Units 3 & 4 Chemistry and exactly how to fix each one using past exam practice.
Many students save past papers for the final few weeks before the exam. That’s too late. Past exams aren’t just practice; they’re your best source of information about how VCAA phrases questions, allocates marks, and expects answers to be structured.
Start working through past exams from Term 2 onwards, alongside your regular topic revision. Doing a paper (or even a section of one) after finishing each topic helps you see how that content is actually examined, not just how it’s presented in your textbook.
The exam paper tells you what was asked. The examination report tells you why students lost marks, what a “full mark” answer looks like, and which misconceptions came up most often. Skipping this report is one of the biggest wasted opportunities in VCE study.
When you self-mark a past paper, always read the matching examination report line by line, even for questions you got right. Examiners often flag partial-mark answers that look correct at a glance but miss a key term or unit.
Section A feels “easy” compared to the extended response section, so students often speed through it without double-checking calculations or re-reading the question stem. Multiple-choice questions in Chemistry are deliberately written with distractor answers that match common calculation errors, so a rushed guess often lands on the “trap” option, not the correct one.
Treat every multiple-choice question as worth full attention. If you finish Section A well under time, it’s a sign you’re moving too fast rather than working efficiently.
A common pattern in past exams is students spending too long on early extended response questions and then rushing (or leaving blank) the final, often higher-mark, questions. Since later questions can be worth just as many marks as earlier ones, this is a costly habit.
Practising this pacing under timed conditions with real VCAA Chemistry past exams is the only way to build it as a habit.

Chemistry extended response questions are marked against specific criteria, and examiners consistently report that students lose marks for leaving out units, not naming specific species, or giving a general answer where a specific mechanism or equation was required. “The reaction rate increases” is not the same as “the reaction rate increases because a higher temperature increases the frequency of successful collisions between particles.”
Use past exam questions to practise writing full, precise responses, then compare them against the sample answers in the examination report to check your level of detail matches what’s expected for full marks.
VCAA uses specific command terms like “identify,” “explain,” “evaluate,” and “justify,” each of which requires a different type of answer. A common mistake is answering an “explain” question with an “identify”-level response (a single fact with no reasoning), which caps the marks available even if the fact itself is correct.
Go through several years of past papers and sort questions by command term. Notice how the expected answer length and structure changes between “state,” “describe,” “explain,” and “evaluate.”
Even when the final numerical answer is wrong, VCAA awards method marks for correct working.
The Chemistry data book contains formulas, standard reduction potentials, and reference data students are expected to use, but many students either forget to reference it during the exam or don’t practise finding information in it quickly. This costs precious time when every minute counts.
Practise every past exam with your actual data book (not a printed formula sheet substitute) so you’re fast and familiar with its layout on exam day.
A growing number of questions in recent exams are based on given data sets, titration curves, or experimental results rather than pure recall. Students often lose marks by misreading axis labels, units, or scale, or by not linking their answer back to the specific data provided.
When practising past exams, slow down on data-based questions specifically. Annotate the graph or table before you start writing, and always refer back to specific values in your answer rather than describing the trend in general terms.
Doing past exams open-book, untimed, with your notes next to you, builds familiarity but not exam readiness. The mistake many students make is only ever practising this way, then feeling the time pressure and structure of the real exam for the first time on the day itself.

Chemistry is consistently rated as one of the more demanding VCE subjects because it combines heavy content with tricky calculations and precise exam expectations, but ‘hardest’ really depends on your strengths. Students who struggle with maths-based reasoning often find it tougher than humanities subjects, while those comfortable with formulas and lab-based logic can do very well.
There’s no strict ‘fail’ mark in VCE; your result is a study score based on your performance relative to other students, so a poor exam simply lowers your study score and contributes less favourably to your ATAR. You can still receive credit for the unit as long as you meet the school’s satisfactory completion requirements.
VCE study scores are scaled so that 30 represents the median performance across the state, so the average Chemistry study score sits around 30 in most years, though this can shift slightly depending on cohort performance. Scores above 40 place a student in roughly the top few per cent of Chemistry candidates.
No, VCAA only permits an approved CAS or scientific calculator with an empty (cleared) memory for exams; calculators with unapproved user-defined functions or stored notes are not allowed.
