  • The expectations of genre and how genre can influence stories.

Creative Writing

  • Creative writing in practice!
  • How to respond to a stimulus in a sophisticated way.
  • Build characters and learn how to engage your reader.
  • How to include figurative language into your stories.
  • How to avoid cliché.

Day 1

Writing About Prose

  • How to identify and analyse techniques used in prose such as irony, motif, imagery and contrast.
  • Strategies to identify key information in questions.
  • How to a plan a logical essay.
  • How to incorporate techniques in order to justify an argument.

Day 2

Essay Workshop

  • How to plan and structure a logical argument.
  • How to incorporate examples and techniques in order to justify an argument.
  • How to edit work effectively – the final improvements to gain extra marks!

Writing About Poetry

  • How to identify and analyse techniques unique to poetry such as form, rhyme and enjambment.
  • How to use critical reading strategies to identify key information.
  • How to evaluate author’s purpose, audience, attitude, argument within the poetry text type.

  • How to plan and structure a logical argument.
  • How to incorporate examples and techniques in order to justify an argument.

Deborah studied a Bachelor of Arts/Advanced Studies with Honours and a Diploma of Languages at the University of Sydney. She has fours years' teaching experience in English.

Mr Brian McMahon
Epping

Dr McMahon completed his PhD in English at Balliol College, University of Oxford (UK). Brian has been tutoring English, Politics and Drama since 2012 and delivered lectures and seminars to undergraduate students.

Mr Sam Webster
Hurstville

Samuel completed his Masters in Secondary Teaching at the University of Technology Sydney. He has had over ten years of English teaching experience in Australia and Italy.

Dr Tim Steains
Strathfield

Timothy Steains completed his PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies Department at the University of Sydney in 2017. He has tutored in English at the University of Sydney and has been teaching at Matrix since 2013.
