Financial Controller

Matrix Education is hiring a Financial Controller to join the us at our Sydney CBD head office.

As the Financial Controller, you will lead the financial management and strategic financial operations of the organisation. 

Reporting to the CFO, the Financial Controller will oversee the finance function and lead the implementation of finance-related systems, ensure effective cash flow forecasting and management, support mergers and acquisitions, and provide strategic financial insight to support business growth and risk management.

This is a key leadership role requiring a mix of financial rigor, systems implementation expertise, and strategic foresight.

What you’ll do…

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Provide timely financial insights to the CFO and executive team to inform decision-making.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Supervise the preparation and delivery of monthly board reports.
  • Lead the implementation and optimisation of finance-related systems, including ERP upgrades, reporting tools, and automation solutions.
  • Standardise financial reporting processes and ensure data accuracy across the business.
  • Strengthen internal controls, compliance, and operational workflows.
  • Oversee cash flow forecasting, liquidity management, and working capital optimisation.
  • Monitor financial risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with financial, regulatory, and tax obligations.
  • Manage and monitor financial covenants related to banking and funding agreements.
  • Prepare and present compliance documentation to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the CFO in evaluating M&A opportunities and strategic partnerships.
  • Conduct financial due diligence, valuation modelling, and scenario analysis.
  • Lead post-acquisition integration from a financial operations perspective.
  • Coordinate with legal, tax, and operational stakeholders to ensure transaction readiness and compliance.
  • Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering professional growth and high performance.
  • Collaborate across departments to support strategic initiatives and business transformation.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

 

What you’ll need…

  • 10+ years of combined accounting and finance experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA or CA qualification essential.
  • Strong leadership and financial management capability.
  • Expertise in financial systems, process improvement, and ERP implementation.
  • Advanced financial modelling and analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail and stakeholder management.
  • Proactive and adaptable, able to work well under pressure.
