The Matrix Selective School Test Preparation: Final Selective Trials Intensive this upcoming April holidays equips Year 6 students with the skills, strategies, and confidence to excel in the NSW Selective High School Placement Test in May 2026.
For Year 6 students, the focus is on high-stakes exam simulation. This intensive program mimics the rigor of the actual placement test, allowing students to refine their pacing and accuracy across all four subtests.
Across four, 6-hour days, students engage in a “deep dive” format—combining targeted skills revision with multiple mock exams and immediate feedback through days 1-3. The program culminates in a Full Exam Simulation on Day 4 to ensure students are peak-performance ready for May.
Course Format:
| Time | Days 1 – 3 | Day 4 |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00am – 1:00pm | Skills Review & Techniques Review of one specific topic each day, followed by: Mock Test 1 Marking and Feedback included. Mock Test 2 Feedback included. | Online Mock Test A full test sat under real exam conditions. Short breaks included between each topic. |
| 1:00pm – 2:00pm | Lunch Break | |
| 2:00pm – 4:00pm | Writing Type Techniques & Test Day 1: Imaginative Day 2: Informative Day 3: Persuasive | Writing Workshop Refine and rework written responses based on feedback received. |
What’s Included
1. 4 Full Day Intensive Curriculum
A rigorous, full-day schedule (9am–4pm) designed to build exam stamina. Each day includes multiple full-length timed sections across Thinking Skills, Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Writing.
2. Immediate Review & Strategy Sessions
Every mock test is followed by an in-depth review session where teachers break down solutions, demonstrate time-saving strategies, and identify common pitfalls to avoid.
3. Comprehensive Resource Pack
Students receive physical printed test papers for in-class simulations and access to online writing simulations to mirror the digital components of the modern Selective Test.
4. All-Access Matrix Learning Management System
Gain full digital access to the Matrix Learning Management System. This includes ALL previous Year 6 Selective resources:
5. Detailed Performance Analytics
Parents receive a comprehensive Performance Report after the intensive. This includes raw section scores, percentile rankings against the cohort, and specific, actionable recommendations for the final weeks of study.
6. Expert Guided Feedback
With small class sizes, students receive personalized feedback on their writing and reasoning, ensuring they understand the “why” behind every correct answer.
7. Pre-Exam Homework Workshops
To ensure students remain sharp in the final stretch, we offer free homework Support Workshops during the two weeks leading up to the official exam. Available at select campuses, these sessions provide dedicated time for students to clarify difficult concepts and finalize their Selective skills. Online booking is required.
Audience
The Final Selective Trials are designed for Year 6 students aiming for a Selective School placement. This course is ideal for students who:

Benefits
The Matrix Selective School Mock Test Intensive builds peak exam-day stamina while equipping your child with the high-level strategies needed to perform under pressure.
1. Elite Test Stamina
Through a rigorous 6-hour daily schedule, students transition from 2-hour bursts to the full-day endurance required for the official Selective School Test.
2. Rapid Error Correction
With two Mock Tests per morning (Days 1 – 3) followed by immediate teacher-led reviews, students identify and fix mistakes in real-time, preventing bad habits from sticking.
3. Writing Mastery
Dedicated afternoon blocks provide masterclasses in all three core text types: Imaginative, Informative, and Persuasive, followed by timed writing simulations for each.
4. Resource Library
Enrollment grants full access to the Matrix Learning Management System (LMS), containing all previous Year 6 Selective resources. This is a massive digital library featuring:
5. Precision Performance Analytics
Based on the full mock test sat on day 4, parents receive a Detailed Performance Report including raw scores, percentile rankings against the Matrix cohort, and specific, actionable recommendations for the final weeks of study.
6. Psychological Readiness
Repeated exposure to high-pressure, timed conditions reduces “blank-out” moments and test anxiety, replacing them with a calm, methodical approach to every subtest.
Approach
High-Intensity Skill Immersion
Students engage in a “Split-Day” model: intensive morning blocks dedicated to technical accuracy in Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills, followed by afternoon mastery of all Writing text types. This ensures students are applying the techniques and work they revise.
The Matrix Teaching Method
Advanced Course Progression
The program is built on a crescendo model. We begin with targeted discipline blocks (Days 1–3) to shore up specific weaknesses and finish with a Real Exam Simulation (Day 4). This progression ensures students are not just “test-ready,” but “stamina-ready” for the 2026 Selective School Test.
The Digital Ecosystem (Matrix LMS)
Students leverage the Matrix LMS to access a massive archive of previous Year 6 Selective resources, homework, and extension activities, allowing for a personalized study path leading up to the exam in May.

The practice questions and tips really sharpened his skills and got him ready for the exams, helping him perform at his best when it counted.
The test [has] been particularly beneficial in identifying and improving on his weak areas.
The test helps me to gain a clear understanding of my child’s strengths and areas for improvement.
I used to find homework and school work difficult. It took me so much time to get it all done. After joining Matrix, I can keep up with school work a lot quicker.
He loves to study and understands the topics much better. His performance has increased and become better.
Thinking Skills courses helped my child build profound knowledge for OC test (especially for Thinking Skills). My child is now attending Selective School Test Preparation course and it has been helpful and nurtured my child’s knowledge for the selective test. Thank you!
The Thinking Skills courses are truly amazing, starting with basic knowledge and principles, and have been so beneficial in building solid OC skills and strategies.
I think Matrix Education courses give me the best form of learning. I love how the teacher explains things in class!

Who are Matrix Selective Test Preparation teachers?
All Matrix Selective Test Preparation teachers are experienced educators who possess degrees in Primary Education or related disciplines. Our Selective Test Preparation experts are knowledgeable, qualified, and have the real teaching experience necessary to explain concepts clearly whilst making learning engaging and enjoyable for young learners.
How do Matrix teachers teach Selective Test Preparation?
Matrix Selective Test Preparation teachers deliver a structured and engaging primary tutoring experience through a mix of direct instructional and interactive teaching. All Matrix Selective Test Preparation courses include high-quality resources designed to provide students and teachers with proven methods for reading comprehension, writing, mathematical reasoning, and thinking skills.
Does the Matrix Selective Test Preparation program cover all four Selective Test sections?
Yes. The Matrix Selective Test tutoring program covers every aspect of the Selective Test thoroughly: Reading, Writing, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills.
Are critical thinking skills the same as Thinking Skills?
No. The Matrix Selective Test Preparation course teaches students a wide range of critical thinking skills that are applied and assessed across all four sections of the Selective Test: Reading, Writing, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills.
The Thinking Skills section is one of these four components, and focuses specifically on logical and spatial reasoning.
When should my child start Selective Test Preparation tutoring?
For the best results, we recommend students begin Matrix Selective Test Preparation tutoring 12 to 18 months before the exam. This allows students to thoroughly master all four sections of the Selective School Test, while developing strong exam technique and time management skills.
If your child has missed the earlier modules, they can catch up using the Matrix+ online course.
Does this course cover all four sections of the Selective Test?
Yes. The intensive provides comprehensive coverage across all four subtests: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Writing. Each day is dedicated to a specific discipline, culminating in a full-length simulation of the entire exam on Day 4.
Why are the days so long?
The official NSW Selective High School Placement Test is a rigorous, multi-hour exam. By training in a 6-hour environment, students acclimatize to the pressure, learn to manage fatigue, and refine their pacing strategies so they can perform at their peak during the final hour of the real test.
What is the Matrix Learning Management System (LMS)?
Enrolling in the Year 6 Intensive unlocks full access to the Matrix Learning Management System (LMS). This is a massive digital library containing ALL previous Year 6 Selective resources, including past homework sets, additional mock tests, extension activities, and online practice questions. This allows students to continue their preparation independently after the holiday course concludes.
Will I receive a report on my child’s progress?
Yes. Parents receive a detailed Performance Report following the intensive. This includes raw section scores, percentile rankings against the Matrix cohort, and specific, actionable recommendations to guide your child’s final weeks of study.
What are the Free Homework Support Workshops?
To support students in the final stretch, we offer Free Homework Workshops during the two weeks leading up to the official exam in May. These sessions are held at select campuses and allow students to drop in and clarify difficult concepts or finalize their LMS homework with teacher guidance. Online booking is required.
How do teachers help students improve their Writing scores?
We dedicate three afternoon blocks specifically to the “Triple Threat” of writing: Imaginative, Informative, and Persuasive. Teachers provide revision on sophisticated techniques for each text type, followed by timed simulations and expert feedback to ensure students can adapt to any prompt.
What should my child bring to class?
Students should bring a pencil case (lead pencils, eraser, and sharpener), a water bottle, and a healthy lunch for the break.
What if my child misses a day?
Because this course includes access to the Matrix LMS, students can review many resources digitally. However, we strongly recommend full attendance, as the real-time “Double Mock” feedback loops and the Day 4 Full Simulation are unique in-person experiences that cannot be replicated online.

Matrix+ is an online Selective Test Preparation tutoring course consisting of on-demand Theory Tutorial Videos paired with a Matrix Theory Book. It is a flexible, accessible, affordable, and self-paced alternative to Matrix on-campus tutoring.
Does my child need to attend Matrix+ at a set time?
