What does it mean to 'accelerate' in Maths?
Certain NSW schools offer accelerated Mathematics courses for students. Accelerating in Mathematics means completing HSC Mathematics a year early.
The Matrix Maths Acceleration courses follow a structured, term-by-term program which prepares students to complete HSC Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 in Year 11. Year 7 and 8 students are challenged with advanced concepts, with Year 9 students completing both the Year 9 and Year 10 Maths content in one year.
Why should my child accelerate?
Students who complete HSC Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 in Year 11 gain more time in Year 12 for other subjects or revision. They gain early experience in HSC-style questions, and build a deep understanding and confidence for Mathematics Extension 2.
Can my child apply for the Matrix Maths Acceleration Program?
The Maths Acceleration program is designed for high-achieving students in Years 7 to 10 who are ready to fast-track their learning. If your child is motivated, confident, and has exceptional Maths abilities, this program is for you. Students who aim to complete HSC Mathematics Advanced and Extension 1 in Year 11 are also encouraged to apply.
How is Matrix's Maths Acceleration program different to the normal Matrix Maths course?
The Maths Acceleration Program is a rigorous, selective academic program designed for high-performing students who are ready to be challenged beyond their school curriculum. The normal Matrix Maths course teaches students one term ahead, while the Maths Acceleration program fast-tracks students through the Year 7 to 10 content to prepare them to complete the HSC Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 courses in Year 11. Year 9 and 10 Maths Acceleration students are up to a year ahead of their peers.
When do applications close?
Students can apply for the Maths Acceleration program at any time. The Maths Acceleration entrance test is held every two weeks at select campuses.
Enrolments for Matrix courses close in Week 3 of the Matrix term. If your child is accepted to the Maths Acceleration course after this date, they will join us the following term.
How can I prepare my child for the entrance test?
Students can prepare for the entrance test by:
What if my child isn’t selected this time?
Our Matrix Academic Team will contact you regarding how to support your child to help them qualify in the future. Students are encouraged to join the term, holiday, or online Maths course to build strong problem-solving skills through structured lessons and marked homework. Students can re-apply at a later date.
Where can my child attend class in Sydney?
The Maths Acceleration program is available at all of our Matrix NSW campuses: Castle Hill, Chatswood, Epping, Hurstville, Parramatta, Strathfield, and Sydney City. It is currently offered as an on-campus class only. Class availability can be found on the Maths Acceleration Course pages.
What happens when my child begins Year 11?
At the conclusion of the Year 10 Maths Acceleration course, students will be enroled in a Year 11 Maths Acceleration course which covers the Year 12 Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension 1 content. These classes are separate to current Year 12 students.
