From 2026, Year 9 students will be taught under the updated NSW Science syllabus. This guide covers what has changed, what Year 8 students taking Year 9 Science will study, how assessment works, and the four study habits linked to stronger results in Year 9.

What’s new in the NSW Science syllabus?

Set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), the rollout of the Science 7 – 10 Syllabus (2023) began in 2026. Schools have implemented the new syllabus for Year 7 and Year 9 only, to ensure existing Year 8 and Year 10 students are not interrupted midway through their studies of the 2018 syllabus. 

Three details matter most for parents:

  1. Content is organised into named focus areas. Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10 combined) is built from eight focus areas: Energy, Disease, Materials, Environmental Sustainability, Genetics and Evolutionary Change, Reactions, Waves and Motion, and Data Science. NESA recommends specific topics for Years 9 and 10, but this is not mandatory, so Year 9 content may vary by school. Matrix’s Year 9 course teaches Energy, Disease, Materials and Environmental Sustainability.
  2. Application is given more weight in assessments than recall. The syllabus requires students to develop various skills, like analysing graphs, applying communication skills to explain the systems, or utilising known concepts on unfamiliar problems. Memorisation does not necessarily prepare students for these questions.
  3. Skills are embedded in every topic. Planning investigations, processing data and evaluating claims previously sat in a separate skills chapter. They now appear in every topic, in every year group.

Year 9 Science topics: what your child will study

Matrix’s Year 9 Science course is built around the four focus areas recommended for Year 9 students by NESA: 

1. Energy: circuits and quantitative reasoning

Energy covers conservation of energy, efficiency, electricity generation, current, voltage, resistance, Ohm’s Law, and series and parallel circuits. It is the first topic in the course to require sustained numerical work, and it is where students who have relied on descriptive answers alone tend to lose marks.

Most marks are generally lost in how students demonstrate their skills rather than conceptual understanding. Students should write the relevant formula, substitute values correctly, and state the unit. Students who practise this method early tend to perform well in this topic, and are better suited to study Physics in Year 11.

At Matrix: Energy is taught in Term 1 (October to December). Matrix students complete this topic before most schools begin teaching it, which gives them more time to consolidate knowledge of complex and unfamiliar topics.

2. Disease: body systems and immunity

Disease covers the nervous and endocrine systems, homeostasis, infectious disease, immunity, and disease surveillance. The content list is long, and the syllabus now requires students to explain underlying mechanisms.

Given its connection to vaccines, disease outbreaks and the body’s stress response, this tends to be an interesting subject for students, helping them persevere through the more demanding sections of the topic. It is a precursor to Year 11 Biology, where the amount of theory increases substantially compared to Chemistry and Physics.

3. Materials: bonding and chemical properties

Materials covers ionic and covalent bonding, physical and chemical properties, organic compounds and polymers. It is foundational for Year 11 Chemistry. Students who understand bonding in Year 9 generally find senior Chemistry familiar; students who memorised the content without understanding it often need to relearn it in Year 11.

At Matrix: Materials is taught in Term 3 (April to June).

4. Environmental Sustainability: data analysis and evidence

Environmental Sustainability covers climate science, climate data analysis, pollution, recycling and sustainability case studies. Most marks in this topic come from interpreting graphs and arguing from evidence, the same skill assessed in HSC science examinations.

At Matrix: Environmental Sustainability is taught in Term 4 (July to September).

How is Year 9 Science assessed?

Assessments vary by school, so parents should keep that in mind when evaluating their child’s progress. Broadly speaking, the pattern across schools will include:

  • Topic tests at the end of each unit, typically combining multiple choice, short answer, and at least one graph or data-interpretation question.
  • Practical tasks and investigations linked to the focus areas, such as building circuits, controlling variables, and justifying a conclusion.
  • Homework and quizzes that contribute to the ongoing assessment mark.
  • “Explain” questions, a feature of the current syllabus: explain why, justify your answer, and use the data to support your answer. These questions typically allocate one mark for the correct fact and two marks for the reasoning that supports it.

How to help your child prepare: four recommended study habits

Four habits are consistently associated with stronger outcomes in Year 9 Science:

  1. Review the content during the holiday break. Familiarising themselves with next term’s content during holidays is more beneficial to students than cramming before an exam. The benefits of early preparation compounds over the term to give students a bigger academic advantage.
  2. Practice application and recall. Work through worked examples first, then exam-style questions on circuits, body systems and graph interpretation. A useful check: ask your child to explain, out loud and without notes, why an answer is correct.
  3. Ask for feedback from tutors and teachers. Uncorrected practice can reinforce errors. Even brief written feedback improves the value of homework as a study tool.
  4. Write original notes, with one page per focus area. Summarising content in a student’s own words supports retention more effectively than reading a prepared summary, even though it takes longer to produce.

Why Year 9 Science matters for the HSC

Year 9 marks are not counted towards the HSC, but each of the topics taught in Matrix’s Year 9 course are foundational to senior science:

  • Energy leads to Year 11 Physics. Circuits, current and voltage are revisited in Year 11 at a higher level. Students who understand Ohm’s Law in Year 9 generally recognise the concept when it reappears.
  • Disease leads to Year 11 Biology. Body systems, immunity and disease incidence are revisited at a more advanced level, using the same terminology introduced in Year 9.
  • Materials leads to Year 11 Chemistry. Bonding is foundational to senior Chemistry. Students either learn it in Year 9 or relearn it under greater pressure in Year 11.
  • Environmental Sustainability supports all three senior subjects, since data analysis and evidence evaluation are assessed across HSC science courses.

Students who begin Year 11 with a solid foundation in these topics can choose senior subjects based on genuine interest and ability and will be able to discern their preferences much earlier than their peers. Those choices affect their ATAR outcomes and their choice of university courses in areas like medicine, engineering and science. Year 9 is also the year in which this foundation is easiest to build, while the content is still accessible and students are developing their study habits.

From 2026, NSW schools begin teaching the Science 7 – 10 Syllabus (2023) for Year 9 students (Year 10 follows in 2027). It replaces the 2018 syllabus.
